1. Turn off the Water

When you notice a leak, the very first thing you should do is to shut off the water. If turning off the water on the appliance that is leaking doesn’t work, or you’re not sure where the water is leaking from, then shut off the main water valve. 4. Check Surrounding Areas

After you’ve taken care of the immediate area, look around to make sure no other area is affected. Water has a way of getting around without being seen. If the leak occurred upstairs, go downstairs and check your ceilings and walls.

5. Check Ventilation

The best way to prevent leaks from the roof (from melted ice dams or heavy rain) or another room upstairs is by having proper ventilation. Make sure the soffit is properly ventilated; with holes all down the side. Even after a leak has occurred, checking and updating your ventilation will help keep fresh air in the room and prevent mold and/or decay.

6. Install Leak Detection System

One easy way to prevent water damage is to install a water leak detection system. This system will alert you when a leak in your home is detected, saving you possible thousands the first time it works. Some systems even shut off all the water in your home automatically when a leak is detected, giving you peace of mind when you’re away from home.

7. Call a Specialist

After you’ve done all you can yourself for the water leak, call a specialist to come and take a look at the effected area. If the leak was small and easy to manage, don’t bother, but if the leak was large and may have sunk into the floors or walls then it is important to make sure damage isn’t still being done to your home.

1. Poor Roof Construction — This has become a serious problem in the past 15 years or so. The roofing contractors must fight the weather to meet completion deadlines. Oftentimes installation continues during unfavorable weather conditions. Sometimes moisture is trapped in the roofing system and can contribute to early failure of the roof.

The results of corner cutting are cropping up, all across the country, in the form of inadequate roof insulation, poor roof decks, and the use of 2-ply instead of 3-ply and 4-ply paper in building the new roof. It is now not uncommon for a new roof to leak not long after it has been laid down.

2. Normal Aging and Weathering - A roof begins to deteriorate the day it is constructed. Its main enemy is the weather. It takes a pounding from the sun, rain, snow and sleet; it is scorched by intense summer heat and buffeted by high winds from storms. The sun dries out the roofing paper; causes the tar to run and sag, weakening the roof mat. As this oxidation soaks the oils out of the paper, it becomes brittle and subject to cracking and splitting; and when the weather suddenly changes, the extreme expansion and contraction brings the ultimate disaster - A roof leak!

3. Settling of the Building - All buildings settle; It is their nature, but some settle much more than others. When a building settles at an abnormal rate, this puts great stress on the roof. This unusual movement can, and will, create enough strain to cause a roof leak, which if left ignored will result in a general roof breakdown.

4. Vibrations - Some of these result from natural phenomena such as earth tremors, severe storms such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Even buildings located many miles from such an act of nature can get enough impact to put a strain on the building, which in turn carried to the roof can contribute to a roof leak. Other vibrations from machines, equipment, air conditioners, railroads and truck traffic cause early failure.

5. Mechanical Damage - Much more prevalent than you might think. In today’s technology, it has become standard to put many pieces of equipment on the roofs; air conditioning units, phone and TV antennas, sign supports, elevator housings etc., which presents a serious problem for two reasons.

A. They put extra weight on the roof.

B. They require servicing, and every time a serviceman goes on a roof there is some danger of damage being done. Even harmlessly using a small ladder on a roof can make a small break in a flashing, which unknown to the building owner can result in leakage and damage.

Typically the windshield washer fluid leaks come from the windshield water reservoir.  Other types of fluids that may leak are the brake fluid; which normally appears along the brake lines and fuel leaks that can be identified by its smell. Having figured out that the type of leak is engine oil; the next step is to identify the location where it is coming from. If it is engine oil, then it is certainly coming from the engine.

Leaks from the engine are the most occurring types of leaks and when identified, the leak has to be corrected immediately. This is because if the engine is leaking, the level of oil in the engine will be low causing irreparable damage to the engine. The next step is to pinpoint the exact location of the leak on the engine. Small leaks such as from the valve cover gasket is likely to move down the manifolds, vacuum lines and the wires and spread all over. When trying to locate the sources of the oil leak from the engine, get a light and take a look at the engine. However, if one is not certain about the exact location of the leak, do not start replacing anything so as not to damage the expensive engine gasket. 

With the oil still in the engine, finding the leak will be next to impossible. Therefore it is recommended that the engine be free from oil before locating the point of the leak. Using a good engine cleaner such as the Gunk Engine Cleaner or any other type, make sure the engine is thoroughly cleaned. Follow the directions indicated on the product when cleaning the engine. Some of the engine areas that may leak are the valve cover gaskets, oil filter, rear bearing seal, cover seal, and the oil pan drain plug. After cleaning the engine ensure the PCV system is checked.  This is because if the PCV is filled with dirt, it will likely increase the pressure of the engine, causing it to leak. Professional help should be sought when trying to repair the source of the leaks that are difficult to replace. Repairing a leaking engine is of essence to avoid preventable car accidents.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled water used for drinking. While most consumers assume that bottled water is at least as safe as tap water, there are still potential risks. Although required to meet the same safety standards as public water supplies, bottled water does not undergo the same testing and reporting as water from a treatment facility. Water that is bottled and sold in the same state may not be subject to any federal standards at all.”

Wood urges consumers to take matters into their own hands by employing an in-home water filtration system. “If clean drinking water is your primary concern, a number of alternatives to buying bottled water are available. All offer greener alternatives to bottled water, reducing the huge volume of plastic water bottles that end up in landfills. Point-of-use (POU) systems treat water at a single tap. Point-of-use systems include pour-through products, faucet mount filters, counter-top manual fill systems, counter-top systems connected to sink faucet, or plumbed-in systems that are installed under the sink with a permanent connection to an existing water pipe.”

If your water woes are more widespread and include problems with rust or sediment, scale or odors, you might want to consider a point-of-entry filtration system explains Wood. “Point-of-entry (POE) systems treat water as it enters the house, providing filtered water for use throughout the house for drinking, bathing, cooking, laundry and dishwashers.”

Continues Wood, “POE systems can stop dirt, sediment, rust and scale. Both rust and sediment, left unchecked, can ruin appliances while scale creates unsightly build up on water fixtures, coats water heating elements thereby reducing their efficiency, wastes soap by reducing its lathering ability, and leaves an unpleasant residue on your skin, hair, and clothes when they are washed. Also, one of the most common chemical disinfectants found in municipal city water supplies is chlorine, which tastes and smells bad and can be removed with a carbon filter.”

Both POU and POE devices are based on various contaminant removal technologies including carbon filtration, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and distillation. In addition, flow rate, filter size, filter life and port size are also important components in point-of-entry systems, which require professional installation. Whichever system is used, it should meet NSF/ANSI standard 53 and be certified to remove the contaminants of concern in your water.

So the debate goes on, bottled water vs tap water, with no clear winner in sight. Make no mistake about it, neither of these are the best solution, as both carry health dangers with them. Let me explain why.

We seem these days to be caught up in the tap versus bottled water argument, but failing to see that neither is acceptable. The bottled variety has been proven to be no healthier than tap, as the US FDA says: \”Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the American public.\”

Many times in this bottled water vs tap water debate people forget the huge downside, that we throw away over 60,000,000 plastic bottles a day here in the US. This is a truly mind boggling amount and reason for some states to start charging an extra tax, as they have.

Remember, there are no government standards requiring it to be any better, purer or safer than tap water.

Similarly in the tap versus bottled water deliberations, we must bear in mind that a recent study has said there are 2100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer in our tap water, including herbicides, pesticides and pharmaceuticals.

Out of 29 states quality tested, everyone had traces of at least one weed killer in every glass. US EPA chief Carol Browner says: \”The way we guarantee safe drinking water is broken and needs to be fixed.\”

So who is the real winner if both lose in the bottled water vs tap water debate? Well the answer is home filtered water. This is the way millions of Americans are already protecting themselves and the environment, by taking responsibility for their own well-being. So much for the tap versus bottled water argument!

Forget the reverse osmosis systems you may have heard about, as they are very wasteful, expensive to maintain and do not filter out all the dangers. They also remove the vital trace minerals we need for our long term health like calcium and potassium.
