Leaks - Prevention and Cures
Charles Kassotis recently asked:
The best way to solve plumbing leaks is to prevent them. Take a look at some very easy steps you can take toward prevention, and what to do if your prevention isn’t enough.
Winter is tough on pipes and even your indoor plumbing can freeze if the room gets cold and the pipes are not thoroughly insulated. Underground pipes should be buried at least several inches deep with the exact depth dependent on the typical weather for your area.
Wrap all exposed lines, even those under you house. There are several options for wrapping plumbing. You may opt for the rolled fiberglass wrap that’s widely available at retailers. In that case, you simply unroll the wrapping and wind it tightly around pipes.
If you’re allergic to fiberglass or don’t want to handle it, you may find that a foam wrap is better. This type is also readily available, though you may have to hit a hardware store to find it. In this case, the weather wrap comes in “joints” - usually ten feet long. The joint is split from end to end down the middle. You open it and slip it onto the pipe. If you choose this type, you need to know what size your pipe is and you may need to wrap duct tape around the joint to hold it firmly in place.
One point to keep in mind when wrapping pipes is the amount of water is on the outside of those pipes. If you wrap a pipe with fiberglass stripping and water accumulated, it could form a giant icicle, making it likely that the pipe will free anyway. If you’re in an area that typically experiences extreme winters, you may also need to wrap lines that are buried very near the surface.
Leaving water dripping inside the house is one way to help prevent freezing. It’s a simple matter of physics - running water isn’t going to freeze unless the temperatures get really low.
If your water lines do freeze, start looking for leaks before the water thaws. You’ll usually find that lines have large amounts of ice on the outside if they’re broken. Turn off the water immediately. Getting to the leak before the water starts running means you’ll save having to clean up the mess.
Most water lines today are PVC pipes. They’re a hard white or off-white plastic and are very easy to repair. You’ll need connections, glue and a section of pipe a few inches longer than the break. Since there are several kinds of the pipe and it’s sometimes difficult to determine the size, it’s a good idea to cut out a section of the broken pipe before you start. Take that with you to the plumbing supply store to be sure you get the correct replacement parts.
Cut the pipe at least an inch or two past the visible leak. Hairline cracks will still leak but are difficult to see until the water pressure hits it. Most PVC glue works on wet pipe. Make your pipe as dry as possible, but don’t worry too much about a bit of water.
After you’ve replaced the pipe, it’s a good idea to send someone to turn on the water while you watch for leaks.

The Top 10 Benefits of Home Filtration of Tap Water
John recently asked:
Essentially, you have no excuse for not having a home water filter. Drinking and bathing in tap water can cause a variety of health problems that can easily be alleviated with the use of a home water filter. Here are the top 10 benefits of using home water filters and why you should consider making the switch.
1. The home filtration of tap water using carbon block or granular technology makes your tap water much safer to drink. You are protected from contaminants such as lead, bacteria, and chlorine, which are linked to many serious illnesses.
2. If you use a tap water filter for your shower head, your hair and skin will be much softer. You will also be relieved of skin irritation and allergies if they affect you.
3. The home filtration of tap water will make your water taste much better. Carbon filters are the most effective at improving your water’s taste. Chemicals like chlorine cause your drinking water to taste unpleasant and can affect the taste of your cooking and beverages like coffee as well.
4. When you use a home water filter, you will notice that there is a lot less soap scum on your dishes, in your kitchen, and in your bathroom. The end result is a lot less cleaning.
5. The air quality in your home will improve if you use a carbon block or granular home water filter. The home filtration of tap water prevents the chemicals in tap water from being released in steam from your sink and shower. This steam can cause respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis.
6. Home tap water filters are very inexpensive. They are much cheaper than drinking bottled water. You can get up to 30 gallons per hour of fresh, clean water at less than 10 cents per gallon with a carbon filter. Other water purifiers such as reverse osmosis and distillation are much more expensive so shop wisely.
7. The home filtration of tap water is easy and convenient. When it comes to carbon filters, there is no difficult installation process and you can do it in a matter of minutes. You can even use a whole house filter or under-the-sink filter so the filter doesn’t clutter your home and stays out of sight.
8. If you do your laundry with filtered water from a whole house filter, the chemicals in tap water won’t get embedded in your clothing.
9. The home filtration of tap water will greatly lessen your risk of getting cancer. The ingestion of chlorine alone can cause many types of cancer including bladder, rectal, and breast cancers.
10. When you drink filtered water, you are protected from the dangers of all the unknown chemicals in tap water. Many of the contaminants found in tap water such as prescription drugs have not been studied sufficiently to understand their long-term effects but the results of preliminary studies are alarming to say the least. It is especially important for children to drink clean water since their bodies are less capable of detoxifying.
In conclusion, the benefits of home filtration of tap water are endless and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Carbon block or granular home water filters are convenient, effective, and affordable so there is no excuse not to have one in your home. Drinking tap water is simply a huge health risk so if you want to stay healthy and vibrant for years to come, investing in a carbon home water filter is the way to go.

How Do I Seal A Leaking Pond Membrane
Derek Rogers recently asked:
If your pond membrane is leaking there are three main ways to fix it: the blanket method, the mixed blanket method, and the Sprinkle Method. Once you decide on a method you will need to test your soil to determine what the application rate of your sealant needs to be.
Testing the Pond’s Soil:
Testing your soil is something that you must do to find out what kind of soil you have at the bottom of your pond. Take a can and perforate the bottom of it and then fill the bottom with about two inches of gravel. Cover the gravel with six inches of soil from the bottom of your pond and then tap it. Elevate the can so that the bottom is open and then fill the can with water.
The sealant you choose should have directions on how much should be used per square foot of soil on the bottom of your pond. Typically these application rates differ depending on what kind of soil you’ve used.
The Blanket Method:
This is the most effective method for sealing your leaking pond membrane, but you will need to take more care when applying it. After you prepare the surface that needs to be sealed, remove between four and six inches of the soil at the bottom of the pond. Fill any deep crevices or holes with your sealant-the mixture should be one part sealant to five parts of soil, then smooth everything over with a drag or a roller. After that, cover the area with your sealant-make sure that the sealant layer is even and that there aren’t any thin or bare spots. When the sealant is as even as you can get it to be, replace the soil you removed, but take care to not disturb your layer of sealant.
The Mixed Blanket Method:
Prepare the area that you need to seal just like you did with the blanket method. If the soil is dry then you will need to add enough water to moisten it lightly and then disc or plow the bottom of the pond between four and twelve inches deep and then drag or roll the surface until the surface is smooth. When everything is smooth, apply your sealant in the correct amount. Mix the sealant with the to four to twelve inches of soil by hand raking, tilling or dicing until it has mixed uniformly, and then compact the bottom of the pond by tamping or rolling.
The Sprinkle Method:
You should only use the sprinkle method when you can’t drain the pond or if there is an isolated leak in which spotted treatment might be an alternative. This is the least effective method because the accurate and uniform application of the sealant is hard and because the bottom of the pond might not be clear of debris. Simply sprinkle the appropriate amount of sealant onto the water’s surface and allow it to fall down into place and plug the leaks. The particles will be drawn to the leaks naturally and will repair the leaks without much effort on your part.

Using Tap Water to Make Baby Formula: is it Safe?
Martin Applebaum recently asked:
If you have children, you’re most likely very careful about what you feed them and how you take care of them in order to keep them healthy and safe. More and more parents are increasingly concerned about using tap water to make baby formula or juice for their children because of all the reports about the questionable quality of tap water. Using tap water to make baby formula is not a good idea for a number of reasons.
According to the Ralph Nader Study Group, there are over 2,100 toxic chemicals in tap water, some of which are carcinogenic. The contaminants found in tap water include but are not limited to chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, lead, PCBs, and mercury. In fact, an Environmental Working Group report noted that infants ingest 4 to 9 chemicals in every bottle of formula they drink!
In the past decade, cases of childhood leukemia, asthma, cancer, and immune disorders have risen and scientists think contaminants in tap water are to blame. Children today have an increased exposure to toxins and a decreased ability to detoxify.
Using tap water to make baby formula is dangerous since babies need to drink pure water in order to flush out the toxins that accumulate in their bodies and tap water will only make matters worse. Children are much more sensitive to the toxins in tap water because their defense systems are not fully developed.
There is little we can do to prevent our children from being exposed to the toxins in the air we breathe and the food we eat but we can help our children detoxify by giving them pure water. The chemicals in tap water can cause physical and mental developmental delays in children as well as an increased risk of degenerative disease later in life. Moreover, there are sometimes outbreaks of chlorine-resistant parasites in public water supplies.
While these parasites, such as giardia and cryptosporidium, cause flu-like symptoms in adults they can be fatal for children and the elderly. By using tap water to make baby formula you have no way to protect your child from outbreaks and the harmful health effects associated with the contaminants found in tap water. Your goal?
Instead of using tap water to make baby formula, why not invest in a home water filtration system for your home? A child’s only chance to detoxify is by drinking pure, clean water and if you give your child tap water, you are putting you are putting his or her health at risk. Look for a carbon block or carbon granular filter so you can give your child pure, clean water that will help your child grow up to be healthy and disease-free.

Tapping Guitar
Ricky Sharples recently asked:
As you surf through YouTube you have probably seen guitarists tapping guitar and wondered if you could learn to play like that. The sound you get from tapping guitar playing adds some variety and excitement to your range of techniques. You can use the first or second finger of your left hand to tap the fretboard at the fret your note is at instead of fretting the note and striking the string with your pick.
The basic technique is not difficult to pick up but if you decide to make start on your tapping guitar style, be prepared to put alot of practice time in. For many guitar players learning guitar tapping well takes around six months, so do not be sad if you cannot get it right away.
If you are interested in learning guitar tapping, buy or borrow CDs and watch YouTube clips of these guitar players: Stanley Jordan, Zack Kim, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Buckethead, Tom Morello, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert. Some Metallica songs that feature tapping are Ride The Lightning, Blackened, …And Justice For All, One, The Frayed Ends Of Sanity, To Live Is To Die, Wherever I May Roam and Am I Evil. If you are a beginner guitarist or even at the intermediate stage, you might find that finger tapping is very difficult. This is because it is a whole new skill apart from playing guitar in the normal way.
Tapping guitars is a technique that alot of guitarists are inspired to try by watching guitar virtuosos like Van Halen or Steve Vai. While there is nothing wrong with getting enthusiasm about tapping from a role model remember that no matter how far you go with the guitar it is always best to be yourself. You can only emulate your idols, you cannot BE them.
One way to make use of the songs that have already been recorded is to download Guitar Pro or Powertab do a search for tabs for guitar tapping songs in those formats. The PowerTab trial version and Guitar Pro (free) do not have realistic sound but you can get the notes off the tab and slow the MIDI down to get a handle on how to do the tapping, so they are not totally useless.
When you first try guitar tapping you will want to set the gain on your amp really high. As high as you can handle. In fact better get a pedal so you can lower it again for parts of the music where you are not tapping. If you do not have a top of the range guitar with nice pickups, do your guitar tapping slow so you can hear what you are doing, but keep the beat regular.
As a first attempt at guitar tapping Eruption by Van Halen is not a bad choice. Eddie Van Halen uses three finger tapping which you can pick up by practicing. Hot For Teacher is another Van Halen song you could try. The intro has some nice tapping on the guitar. Just go through any Van Halen CDs to see if there is any tapping you want to try to imitate.

Custom Bathroom Cabinets
Eirik Orman recently asked:
Bathroom Cabinets today are not just small medicine boxes, but have grown tremendously. People today love luxurious bathrooms and install custom bathroom cabinet to enhance the functionality and beauty of the bathrooms. Choosing the custom bathroom cabinet though is not a simple process, as it is important to make right choices for creating an aesthetic space.
An ideal bathroom cabinet should provide countertop space, bathroom sink, and storage space for toiletries, towels and other necessities. It is absolutely essential to have a place for all your requirements in your bathroom itself, and having the right bathroom cabinets increases the magnificence of the bathroom. Thus custom bathroom cabinets are the best option.
Before you buy new bathroom cabinets, you should analyze your bathroom space very well and should decide the width of the cabinets. The bathroom cabinets are available in various inches roughly from 18 to 48 inches. Then the next important consideration is the bathroom style whether you want the traditional American-style bathroom cabinets or the European-style bathroom cabinets. Then next comes the storage.
The important aspect of the cabinets is storage. Custom bathroom cabinets could be closed bathroom cabinets, open shelving bathroom cabinets, or over the counter bathroom cabinets. Linen closets, towers with baskets, built-in closets and freestanding bathroom cabinets are excellent options for storage in the bathrooms. Depending on your needs and your bathroom size you can select any of these custom bathroom cabinets.
Bathroom cabinet tabletops are available in different styles and materials in laminates, ceramic tile, wood, stone, granite or composite materials. Some of the materials give you the option to select from a wide variety of sizes, colors and textures. Each of these types has certain advantages and disadvantages. The custom bathroom cabinets and the equally beautiful cabinet tabletop can give the desired character to your bathrooms.
From simple boxes that were mounted above the sinks of the bathrooms, the bathroom cabinets have evolved into major styling component in the bathrooms. Today, people no longer consider them as simple storage device, but they are considered today as a style element.

Are Plumbing Courses Necessary?
Mattmorgan recently asked:
Every career field has specific requirements that are desired by employers which count as qualifications to be employed at a specific occupation at their desired job. If you are considering a career in plumbing, then you must know the requirements of this field.. Knowing what will help you to get the best jobs available in plumbing, and working your way towards better opportunities in the vocation of plumbing is a simplistic way to get into the career field at a higher level.
One of the most asked questions for people considering the plumbing career field is whether it is necessary to build credentials through education. There are several analysts who have stated that learning the basics of plumbing requires hands-on experience and a certain level of apprenticeship. However, people are discovering as the demand grows for plumbing specialists, the education must be balanced with the demand for plumbing specialists.
If you are looking at career options and need education for a career in plumbing, then taking some plumbing courses can help to give you a boost forward in the field. The more you know about how plumbing works, you will be able to function in your new career. This prevents “first job experiences” such as making common mistakes. Using education as an alternative source for better opportunities presents “well-rounded” valuable experience with your job.
Vocational schools have the best resources for obtaining a certificate or degree in plumbing. Most schools have simulated systems of commercial and homes structures on their campus for the student to handle “real world” situations. For anyone that is interested in building a substantial career in plumbing, you should talk with a counselor at a Vocational school and map out an educational strategy. Vocational schools have the best training programs for plumbing and can give you, the potential student, more attention than a regular college. Plumbing courses is the key to long range career development.

How to Manage Leak Repairs
Groshan Fabiola recently asked:
The rains have left behind some unpleasant marks in your home, such as moisture on the walls and puddles on the floor, so you finally decide it’s time for some leak repairs. The first important step is that you find the leak source, which may turn out to be quite a painstaking process, as many leaks originate rather far away from where they actually appear on the ceiling. You can play detective and try to find the leak source on your own, but there are some dangers involved, especially if your roof is old and not safe to walk on, or if you walk around the basement not looking around carefully. You will also find that some leak repairs are actually quite easy to perform, if your leak is caused by a missing shingle, for instance. However, what’s causing the leak could be a lot more complicated than that, especially if you have roof trusses, which make the leak source tough to spot because of the lumber maze. A leak doesn’t necessarily imply roof replacement but you can take it as a warning that you need an investigation and possibly some leak repairs.
There comes a time when every roofing project will experience a problem such as a leak. Everyone knows that roof should not be expected to last as long as the other structures in your home. When you do see a leak, remember not to panic because roofs can be repaired. Leak repairs are quite easy once the source of the leak has been determined. A leak is nothing like a flood. It can cause a lot of damage, it’s true, but keep in mind that most of the building materials in your home are moisture tolerant, so as long as the leak isn’t prolonged indefinitely, there shouldn’t be any permanent damage to your home. Once again, leak repairs should be performed as soon as the leak source has been determined, so as to minimize the damage the leak could produce. Once you have seen the leak, make sure to remove everything that could be affected by direct moisture, such as TVs, computers, pictures on the wall, chairs, desks, and so on. Install buckets to catch the water dripping from the ceiling. Remember that these are just temporary measures, and that you need leak repairs, because the more you let it drip without taking action the more damage it is likely to cause to your home.
If you feel that you’re not on top of the situation, consider turning to roof contractors who can help you with your problem. If your roof has been installed by a roofing contractor, you may find that they are responsible to carry out at least some of the leak repairs. If you have a signed contract from the roofing contractor who installed your roof, check for responsibilities on the part of the roofing contractor and some possible warranties.
Roofing contractors are specialists who will see you through getting your roof back to safety. They can identify the leak source and perform the necessary leak repairs. But choose your roofing contractor carefully, as there are a lot of steps to follow when choosing someone to fix a problem in your home.

Stop Leaks Before They Drain Your Wallet
Bryan Stevens recently asked:
Dealing With Leaks
Of all the problems that can occur in your plumbing system, none have the potential to be as costly as a good, old fashioned leak. Big or little, fast or slow, leaks cause millions of dollars in damage every year.
Plumbing leaks come in two varieties, water supply leaks and drain leaks. Although water supply leaks can do more damage faster, a leak of any kind should not be ignored. Just look at the Grand Canyon to see what water can do.
Drain Leaks
Drain leaks most often occur around toilet drains, tub or shower drains, and under cabinets. They often show up as a spot on the ceiling below.
If you see a water spot on your ceiling, check directly above for a leak. If you find nothing there check under all the fixtures and in every vanity. Often water will run across a ceiling and show up in a seam or low spot.
It’s a good idea to check under all your cabinets periodically for leaks. If you find a problem you can often correct a small leak by just tightening the slip joint connections in the piping. If you have leaking metal p-traps you can probably change them to PVC for less than the price of a happy meal.
Leaks From Fixtures
Another common plumbing problem is leaks from individual fixtures. These vary from refrigerator water filter leaks to leaking kitchen faucets. Most of the time there are individual fixture stops, or valves, which turn the water off to that fixture only. If so, this allows you to stop the water leak and still have water to the rest of the house.
When you are checking under your cabinets pay careful attention to the stops and to the supply lines going to your faucets. These are prime places for leaks. Use your hands to feel for water on these since it is often hard to see a very small leak.
The Most Urgent Leaks
The most urgent kind of leak is a leak on the main water supply piping in your home. That’s why it is very important to know where your main water shut off is located and how to turn it off. If you have a supply pipe leak, getting the water turned off quickly can prevent thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Galvanized Pipe Is Especially Tricky
Once the water is off you can begin to try to determine what the problem is. If you have an older house you may have galvanized pipe leaks. These are especially tricky because when you fix one you may cause another by disturbing the old pipe.
Nails Don’t Always Leak Right Away
A fairly common cause of leaks in copper piping is a nail in the pipe. Many times these leaks will not show up for quite some time, however long it takes the nail to rust away. Always be very careful when installing baseboard or other trim.
Working With Plastic Pipe
While leaks in galvanized or even copper pipes require special skills and tools, plastic piping is fairly easily repaired. You need to be sure what kind of pipe you have because different types of pipe use different glues and cements. Pay close attention to the curing times for the cement so your fresh repair doesn’t blow apart when you turn the water back on.
Some plastic pipe, like PEX, can’t be glued and must be joined using special fittings. The pros usually use barbed fittings with crimp rings and special crimping tools but there is a fairly new product that you can use called a shark bite fitting. Unlike its namesake, a plumbing shark bite type fitting is a good thing.
Shark Bite Fittings
These plumbing shark bite fittings just push on to the pipe. No tools or special skills required! The only time you need a tool is to remove them. What’s so really good about these plumbing shark bite fittings is that they actually work very well and are used by many professional plumbers every day.
So…we’ve learned that all plumbing leaks are not a reason for alarm. Many are simple to fix with easily learned skills.

The Truth About Chemicals Found in Tap Water
Laurel Tevolitz recently asked:
Forty years ago, there was a limited amount of information about chemicals found in tap water. At that time, the conservation of water, air and soil occupied the thoughts of many future environmentalists.
Today some former conservationists have joined the Environmental Working Group (EWG). That Group has released information about the chemicals found in tap water. Their information has stated that there are 141 unregulated chemicals in the typical glass of tap water.
Such statistics underline the advantage to seeking an alternative to tap water. The public has seen both bottled water and filtered tap water as a likely alternative. Does bottled water lack the chemicals found in tap water? Have those same harmful chemicals been removed from filtered tap water? Those are the questions that this article intends to answer.
A large percentage of the unwanted chemical substances in today’s drinking water result from efforts that were supposed to disinfect some element of the environment. Such disinfection efforts have introduced nitrates, chloroform, barium, arsenic and copper into municipal water supplies.
Today, the water from the tap contains so many different chemicals that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been unable to assess the risk of exposure to each of those chemicals. Even some chemicals that put the public at risk remain absent from the list of chemical limitations on water, limitations that are enforced by the EPA.
Read and consider what Jane Houlihan, vice president of the EWG has said: “…in many communities the water that comes out of the tap could be contaminated with scores of chemicals.” Ms. Houlihan did not issue that statement in order to alarm people. She simply wanted to call attention to the fact that there are many unhealthful chemicals found in tap water.
Today a growing number of groups such as the EWG have found it necessary to expand on their information about the chemical-laden tap water. Those groups have learned that chemicals from the plastic can leech into bottled water. While some people have reverted to filling metal containers with water from the tap, others have chosen to use filtered tap water.
Agriculture, industry and the expansion of urban settings has increased the number of chemicals in the aquatic environment. Treatment plants lack the ability to remove all of those chemicals. Homeowners and businesses must look to filtering systems, if they want to provide residents and employees with clean and good-tasting water.
The most cost effective solution is a point of use filtering system. Still, not all filtering systems do an effective job of delivering pure water to each person who has gone in search of clean drinking water. The most effective filtering equipment contains activated carbon filters, in combination with ion exchange and micron filtration.
When a homeowner or business owner invests in such a system, then he or she can expect to enjoy a worry-free sleep at night. He or she will know that either employees or residents and guests are able to refresh themselves with the safest possible water.
