Don’t be alarmed if you don’t know what your AFUE is – most people don’t know the answer or even what the acronym means. However, the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) of your furnace or boiler provides the key to how much fuel you’ll burn this winter according to John Wood, founder and CEO of Hub Plumbing & Mechanical of Boston.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy “Specifically, AFUE is the ratio of heat output of the furnace or boiler compared to the total energy consumed by a furnace or boiler. An AFUE of 90% means that 90% of the energy in the fuel becomes heat for the home and the other 10% escapes up the chimney and elsewhere.”
To make comparisons easy for consumers, new models of furnaces and boilers are required to display their AFUE, but it’s also possible to identify and compare a system’s efficiency by its equipment features as well. For instance, an old, low-efficiency heating system that utilizes a natural draft for combustion and features a continuous pilot light may have an AFUE of only 68%-72% according to U.S. Department of Energy estimates. “Compared to a high efficiency heating system with an AFUE of 90%-97%, it’s a cold hard fact that replacing an older, less efficient heating system can shave 30% or more off of fuel bills,” notes Wood.
As of mid September, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs estimated the average statewide cost of heating oil at $3.82 a gallon. “Although most people know it’s going to take a small fortune to heat their home this winter at those prices, they often don’t really think about the efficiency of their boiler or furnace as long as the unit continues to fire up every heating season,” notes Wood. “Even though a high efficiency boiler or furnace can be expensive to purchase upfront, think about the alternative - literally watching a third or more of your annual heating fuel cost going up in smoke.”
U.S. Department of Energy estimates indicate that replacing an existing heating system with an AFUE of 60% with a high efficiency system with an AFUE of 90% could save $33.33 for every $100 of fuel costs. In addition, high efficiency heating systems not only offer a way to save on fuel costs, but also help save the planet. The U.S. Department of Energy points out that, “Upgrading your furnace or boiler from 56% to 90% efficiency in an average cold-climate house will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year if you heat with gas, or 2.5 tons if you heat with oil.”
ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, provides more food for thought by offering an online savings calculator that helps consumers look at their potential savings when heating with a high efficiency heating system versus a conventional heating system. The free interactive calculator can be found at www.energystar.gov.

If youre thinking that the cost of that trade school, and its plumbing training, might not be worth the cost of attending, think again.
In the United States the median hourly pay for pipe layers was 13.68 and that was for the last year the wages were studied 2004. The wages have gone up some since that time. The lowest ten percent, those just starting out their on-the-job plumbing training, made only 9.19 per hour on average, while the highest 10 percent earned over 25.07.
Whats important to keep in mind about these figures, too, is that these are for all plumbers who, either in the midst of training, or having completed it, work for other plumbing or related companies. Plumbers who work for themselves may earn as much as 130 per hour. Of course, these are generally folks who are paying the overhead costs of the business, and perhaps people who work under them so its not all gravy.
Plumbing employees, once training has been completed, start out with some variation in wages depending on which industry they work in. If they are employed in natural gas distribution, for example, they make the highest hourly wage 23.86. Those employed in the area of construction of non-residential buildings earn a median U.S. wage of 21.55 per hour. Make sure that the sealant sits a room temperature so that it is easy to apply. Apply and nice think coat of it and smooth it out with a putty knife, and you are all done.
Now if you have a leak where there isn’t a joint then you will need a piece of sheet metal to cover the hole or crack and do the same as above and your leak is fixed.

Chlorination is a step taken by public treatment facilities to improve the purity of tap water. This step reduces the risk of waterborne illness caused by bacterial contaminants, while keeping the pipes clear of algae. Excessive algae would also negatively affect the taste of water, but poses no particular health concern.
THMs - In Tap Water
When chlorine and bromine are used to improve the purity of tap water, byproducts, commonly referred to as THMs, are released. They are known carcinogens. Reasons:

Pouring greasy / Sticky materials into your kitchen sink.
Pouring chemicals /paints into the drains.
Improper / Inadequate venting.
Solution:
Use a plunger to de-clog your drain. This will work for clogs of smaller size. If it still persists, call an expert. Home made solutions do not work for bigger clogs.
Clogs can be removed using various techniques. While a cable can be used to remove solid clogs and break through roots, High pressure water jetting is more effective for clogs due to sticky / greasy materials.
Before using water jetting as option, It is important to determine the quality of the plumbing materials used, for, the high pressure used in the process will rip your pipes apart if they are of a inferior quality.
Check the vents provided for any visible blocks. Find out whether the venting is adequate for the fixture(s) it serves. An expert could help you out in this area. If the venting is absent or inadequate, provide / upgrade to surmount the problem.
Preventive Measures:

All the drainage lines of the building drain slowly and there is a backing of the drain water from the main drainage line.
Reasons:
A block in the main drainage line. or
A block in the inlet / outlet of the septic tank. or
A block in the distribution box. or
A block in the percolation pipes. or
The septic tank has frozen due to an abnormal low weather.
Solution:
Use a snake or water jetting to de-clog the main drain line. This is the work of an expert. He could, through his expertise, say whether the clog is due to solid waste or greasy substances or roots and use a suitable technique to de-clog the same.
Check the inlet and the outlet of the septic tank for any blockage due to solid wastes, scum and so on. Remove the block and check for easy flow.
Check the distribution box located between the septic tank and the percolators. Remove blocks, if any.
Check the area around the percolators. See whether it is moist, swampy and stinky. It means that the percolation is not proper. In other works the soil is not absorbing the drain water at the rate of discharge. It could be either because you usage of water has increased of late due to more guests or the soil has become saturated due to moisture from other sources such as rainfall (more than normal) etc. Immediately enlist an expert, the problem requires instant care.
If the septic tank has frozen due to bad weather seek the help of an expert immediately. If an expert and the equipment needed are hard to find, use the septic tank as a storage tank till such time the tank haws by itself. Judicious use of water will help you hold on for some time. To avoid freezing of the septic tank in the future, winterize before the next winter.
Preventive Measures:
Respect your Septic tank. It is designed for the disposal of organic wastes only. Avoid dumping inorganic and non bio-degradable wastes. They are sure to block the normal functioning of the septic tank and spoil it beyond redemption.
Use filters over the drains in your toilet and kitchen to trap hair and solid objects.
